Finding Faith in the Game: How Sports Teach Us About Life
I hope you enjoy and find some good fellowship in my Sunday Family Sports & Faith posts!! We all love summer and all the different camps, sports, vacations and other activities there are to be a part of. As much fun as this is for our family, I also find myself feeling “guilty” that we’re not in church several Sunday’s during the summer months. I made a Facebook post about this once and someone had such a good reminder for me and anyone else reading. They said, church isn’t the only place to worship God and hear his voice and pray to him. Even if every church tragically was no longer, that wouldn’t change my Faith and how much I love Jesus. It would just mean we would congregate in a different way. Just like when Covid happened. At first I was devastated to think of not being able to attend my normal church service that I had for years, but out of that came this new view and understanding of what coming together meant. As we all sat in that big open field in our cars listening to the sermon on the radio, it was a great reminder of how He really is everywhere. He will meet you wherever you are.
The Race We’re All Running: The passage from 1 Corinthians 9:24-27 says, “Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize. Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last, but we do it to get a crown that will last forever. Therefore I do not run like someone running aimlessly; I do not fight like a boxer beating the air. No, I strike a blow to my body and make it my slave so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified for the prize.” Just like athletes commit to their training, we too can approach our spiritual lives with that same level of dedication. It’s about showing up, putting in the effort, and striving for excellence—not just in our sports, but in our character and faith.
- Commitment and Discipline: Think about the hours athletes spend practicing. That kind of commitment can inspire us to carve out time for our spiritual growth, whether it’s through prayer, reading scripture, or simply spending time in reflection. Just like in sports or anything in life, consistency is key!
- Setting Goals: In sports, we often set goals—whether it’s improving our time, scoring more points, or winning a championship. We can apply that same mindset to our spiritual lives. What do we want to achieve in our relationship with God? Maybe it’s creating patience, practicing kindness, or deepening our understanding of faith.
- Embracing Resilience: Every athlete faces setbacks. Losing a game or missing a shot can be tough, but those experiences build resilience. In our spiritual journeys, we’ll face challenges too. It’s how we respond to those challenges that shapes our character. You have to try to view setbacks as opportunities to grow stronger in our faith.
- Teamwork Matters: Just like a successful team relies on teamwork, our families and faith communities thrive on support and unity. Encouraging each other in both sports and spiritual pursuits creates a powerful bond. Lift one another up and celebrate each other’s victories, big and small!
- Sportsmanship and Character Development: Good sportsmanship teaches us about integrity, respect, and kindness—values that are crucial in everyday life. We should strive to embody these principles not just on the field but in our interactions with others, reflecting the love and grace we receive in our faith.
- Finding Joy in the Journey: What I love most about sports is the joy that comes from playing the game. The same can be said for our spiritual journeys. It’s not just about the end goal; it’s about the experiences we share, the lessons we learn, and the relationships we build along the way.
- Reflection and Growth: After a game, athletes often reflect on their performance. We can do the same in our spiritual lives. Regularly taking time to assess our actions, thoughts, and growth can help us stay aligned with our values and deepen our faith.
- Inspiration and Legacy: Let’s not forget the impact we can have on others. Athletes inspire future generations, and we have the same opportunity in our families and communities. By living out our values and sharing our faith, we can leave a lasting legacy that encourages others to grow.
So, as we dive into this summer filled with sports and family activities, let’s remember the lessons we can learn from competition. By applying these principles to our lives, we can foster personal growth and spiritual development that strengthens our families and communities.
I’d love to hear your thoughts! How have your experiences in sports influenced your spiritual journey?
