Overcoming the Past: Stop Letting Mistakes Define You

By Angie Strefling July 30, 2026

Sometimes I sit back and think about when my life was an absolute shit show—and honestly, that’s giving it too much credit. When you are living in actual hell, just going through the motions, it feels impossible to imagine ever being happy again. But hear me on this: you can, and you will. The only catch? You have to do the work, and you have to actually allow yourself to heal.

The truth is, long after other people stop gossiping or pointing fingers, we keep the pain alive. We pick up that heavy coat of shame and wear it around like a daily uniform, letting our past mistakes become our entire identity. That is exactly when those toxic, intrusive thoughts soar in to finish the job: I’m beyond help. I’m worthless. No one could ever love me.

But you cannot heal what you refuse to talk about. Sure, some things are better left unsaid, but when depression and anxiety twist your entire body into a pretzel, silence is an enemy. That is the exact moment you need to speak up, pour it out, and let it go. You were never meant to carry all this weight alone.

I know the tunnel feels endless right now. It’s dark as hell, and it’s exhausting. But it does end. You are allowed to reinvent yourself 500 times in this lifetime if that’s what it takes. You never have to stay stuck, and you never have to accept a bad chapter as your final destiny. You own your future. Right now, it’s time to take the pencil back from everyone you handed it to. Grab it, drop the shame, and start writing a story you will be proud to share with the world.

What is one old mistake you are choosing to stop wearing today? Leave a comment below and let’s drop the weight together—your next chapter starts right now.
