How to Build a Simple Skincare Routine Without Using 10 Products:

By Angie Strefling August 19, 2026

Hey, I’m Angie and I’m a little obsessed with skincare (in the best way)!

Let’s get this out of the way first.

I love skincare. Like… a lot.

I love the products, I love the routines, I love that little moment when you put something on your face and suddenly feel like you’ve got your life together again. If only!!

That “okay, I might actually be a functioning adult” feeling.

Yeah. That.

But here’s the thing.

Even though I’m very into skincare now, I didn’t start out that way.

And I would never tell someone they need a 10-step routine to take care of their skin.

Because honestly?

That’s not real life.

At least not in a “I have things to do, people to take care of, and I have to heat up my coffee for the 3rd time now” kind of world.

I started simple — and I’m really glad I did.

When I first started paying attention to skincare, I didn’t have a shelf full of products.

I bought the basics.

Cleanser. Toner. Moisturizer.

That’s it.

And honestly? That’s exactly where I think everyone should start.

Because here’s what I’ve learned:

Consistency changes your skin. Not complexity.

Not the trendiest serum.
Not the most expensive bottle.
Not whatever is going viral this week.

Just showing up for your skin… over and over again.

Annoyingly simple. But it works.

If someone came to me today and said:

“I want better skin, but I don’t want a complicated routine…”

I would not hand them a 10-step routine.

I wouldn’t even hand them five products.

I’d say, “start here,” Cleanse. Tone. Moisturize. And of course sunscreen to protect your skin!

That’s it.

Not because more products are bad, but because simple is what builds consistency.

And consistency is where the results actually happen.

Not day 3 excitement.
Week 3 discipline.

Big difference.

Do I use more products now? Yes, I do.

Over time, I’ve added products that make sense for my skin and what I want to focus on.

And I genuinely enjoy it now. It’s part of my self-care routine. My “don’t talk to me, I’m having my skincare moment” time at night.

But don’t forget:

I didn’t start there.
I didn’t add everything at once.
And I don’t think anyone should.

My routine grew because I stayed consistent with the basics first.

That part matters more than people realize.

The truth nobody really says out loud is skincare isn’t complicated. We just make it complicated.

Most people don’t struggle because they don’t have enough products.

They struggle because:

● They buy too much at once

● They get overwhelmed

● They stop using everything

● Then restart again later

And suddenly skincare feels like a chore instead of something you actually enjoy.

Sound familiar? I don’t want that for you!

Been there, done that, didn’t enjoy it and neither did my wallet!

Skincare should not feel like a part-time job you didn’t apply for.

Simple doesn’t mean basic or boring.

Let me be very clear about this.

A simple routine is not a “less serious” routine.

It’s actually the smartest place to start.

Because when things are simple, you can:

● Actually stay consistent

● Notice what works

● Notice what doesn’t

● Build confidence in your routine

● And grow it intentionally over time

Not out of confusion.
Not out of pressure.
But because it makes sense for you.

If you’ve ever:

● Bought a bunch of skincare at once

● Used it for a few days

● Got overwhelmed

● Stopped everything

● Then started over again later

Just know you are very normal.

We’ve all been there, but you don’t have to stay there.

Now, after years of consistency, I do have a more detailed routine — and I love it.

It’s my little end-of-day ritual. My reset. My “this is my time” moment.

But again, I didn’t get here by starting complicated. I got here by starting simple.

And I think that’s the part most people need to hear.

I believe skincare should feel like:

● Something you enjoy

● Something you understand

● Something you can actually stick with

● Something that fits your real life

Not something that stresses you out or makes you feel like you’re always doing it wrong.

Because you’re not.

If you’re just getting started just Cleanse. Tone. Moisturize. SPF during the day.

Do that consistently. That’s your foundation.

Everything else can come later — if and when you want it to.

No pressure. No rush. No 12-step chaos required.

If you love skincare, self-care, real-life routines, and a little bit of sass along the way, you’re in the right place.
